Abstract:
The land use mapping effort consisted of digitizing land use polygons using 1948-1950's, 1976-1977, 1999-2001, and 2011 aerial imagery in a GIS environment. The polygons are digitized at a scale of approximately 1:7,000, with a minimum mapping unit of approximately 1 acre. The goal of the delineation was to capture areas of similar land use as they appeared on the aerial imagery, while maintaining a consistent scale. This was notably challenging with the 1950's and 1976 images due to locally poor resolution of the photography. The 2001 and 2011 imagery has significantly better resolution. Four tiers of nested attributes were developed for the mapping effort. These classes were determined to be the highest level of detail permitted by all suites of imagery. See the accompanying report for complete details on the attributes. The study area is defined by the GIS-modeled 100-year inundation boundary, plus a 500-meter buffer. In total, over 700 square miles of area were mapped for each suite of imager

Some areas smaller than 1 acre were mapped if they were distinct and identifiable in the imagery. See the accompanying report for complete details on the mapping process.
Purpose:
The data were analyzed for changes in land use from year to year. The result of the analysis is presented in https://ftpgeoinfo.msl.mt.gov/Documents/Projects/Yellowstone_River_Clearinghouse/YRCDC_LandUse_Report_Final_011613.pdf.
